Like many, I was full of anticipation waiting for last week’s premiere of the new AKB48 dorama Majisuka Gakuen.\u00a0 Being ‘morning-challenged”, I set three alarms to make sure I woke up on time as the show would be airing at 7:12am local time.\u00a0 Too bad for me I misread the schedule and set them one day too early!\u00a0 I’d have to do it all again the next morning!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Nachu shares my feelings about getting up so early.<\/em><\/p>\n

One more day, would it be worth the wait?\u00a0 I usually take anything I watch via Keyhole TV with a grain of salt.\u00a0 The sound and picture are mediocre at best.\u00a0 And on a good day I will have to stop and re-start the feed at least a couple times.\u00a0 On first viewing I enjoyed the show, although the lack of any plot development left me yearning for more.\u00a0 But that’s okay, obviously they are going to spend the first episode or two introducing the cast of characters, and there are quite a few.\u00a0 It’s difficult to speculate who will be the most prominent characters throughout the series, although we have an idea.\u00a0 The first episode focuses on two…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I didn’t notice it at first, but Maeda doesn’t say a word in the first episode until the end of the show.\u00a0 (Actually, one word as pointed out by WabukiSensei \ud83d\ude42 )\u00a0 Nachu’s part is sort of a “McGuffin” type of character.\u00a0 Two new students, one making a big entrance, the other flying below the radar.\u00a0 Nachu plays Onizuka<\/em> with total camp and zeal.\u00a0 I am really happy she decided to take on this “unattractive” character, and she does an amazing job with it.\u00a0 Everything from the gravely voice to the “fat-suit” is great.\u00a0 But the best moment had to be her exchange with the school nurse (?).\u00a0 This guy may have been the creepiest part of the whole show.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In some ways Majisuka Gakuen<\/em> reminds of the 70’s film classic “The Warriors”.\u00a0 I love all the little gangs, with their distinctive type of dress and habits.\u00a0 Team Hormone is a lot like their “Warriors” counterparts “The Rogues”, Sasshi’s character being like “Luther”\u00a0 Not nearly the toughest group of the bunch, but will probably be the instigators of a lot of crap.\u00a0 Sasshi does an amazing job of playing a sadist.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

If I had to pick one girl who I thought did the best job in this episode, it would have to be Sashihara.\u00a0 I have a feeling “Yankii” might run in her blood.\u00a0 The looks on her face were so amazing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ouch!\u00a0 Hahahahaha!!!<\/em><\/p>\n

The you have Rappappa (Warriors counterpart, The Grammercy Riffs).\u00a0 They are strongest gang of the school, led by Mariko (Masai) and Yuko (Cyrus).\u00a0 We haven’t seen too much action from them yet.\u00a0 That’s because they don’t have to bop their way around school…they own it!\u00a0 Keeping with “The Warriors” theme, that little gang of unknowns at the beginning represent “The Orphans”\u00a0 And who are the “Baseball Furies” you ask???<\/p>\n

Hehehehehe<\/em><\/p>\n

Aside from Nachu and Sasshi who are both great, here are some of my favorite members and their characters…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Komori Mika as “Mukuchi”\u00a0 I love the concept of her being a “mute” character, as that is kind of how I think of her anyway.\u00a0 She didn’t do anything particularly spectacular, but I just adore her!\u00a0 Come to think of it, she actually expressed herself very well!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Nito Moeno as “Bungy”\u00a0 I am pleasantly surprised to see cute little Moeno carrying this part.\u00a0 She’s kind of a wise-ass, and she pulls off the attitude nicely.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Tanabe Miku and Katayama Haruka (Jumbo and Showa)\u00a0 They haven’t been prominently featured yet.\u00a0 I always think of Tanamin as sort of “dorky”.\u00a0 So it was cool to see her play a tough girl.\u00a0 And one of best transformations so far…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That is Nakaya Sayaka, right?\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 She looks amazing in that costume!\u00a0 Quite a departure from the adorable little maid she played in Infinity.\u00a0 I never in a million years would have thought Nakayan could pull off a “tough and intimidating”.\u00a0 Kudos to her!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Back to the show.\u00a0 The first episode was mainly character setup.\u00a0 Nachu is obviously going to be a pain in everyone’s ass.\u00a0 Team Hormone are trouble makers.\u00a0 And then you have Maeda, the girl with a split personality…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

My guess is her motivations will continue to be revealed as the series progresses.\u00a0 Based on the scene that takes place at her home, she has a mild-mannered father and a hellraiser<\/em> for a Mom who was suspiciously absent (dead?\u00a0 prison?)\u00a0 The other little plot point are those bracelets she is wearing.\u00a0 Takahashi Minami is reportedly playing an important “friend” from Maeda’s past.\u00a0 Could the bracelets have something to do with her?\u00a0 Are those friendship bracelets?\u00a0 Why is Maeda wearing both of them?\u00a0 Where is Minami now?\u00a0 Just a thought…Maeda’s motivation has something to do with Takamina.\u00a0 Is this a “revenge” mission?\u00a0 Now this is reminding of Death Wish<\/em>.\u00a0 Acchan is Charles Bronson?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Anyway, Maeda doesn’t stay quiet for too long.\u00a0 Her “statement” being the annihilation of “Team Hormone”.\u00a0 Yes, there’s a new girl in town.\u00a0 Does Yuko-senpai and the rest of Rappappa have something to worry about?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I think they might.\u00a0 It’s going to be Yuko vs. Maeda in a no holds barred Battle Royale!\u00a0 Their Prom should be interesting.\u00a0 Oh yes, I am dying to see next week’s episode \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
